Three's a Crowd? How to Handle the PA Handover Without Losing the Spark

Let's paint the picture. You've got a second date — a good one, the kind you actually looked forward to. The restaurant's booked, the outfit's sorted, and your PA has the car running outside. What you don't need is ten minutes of awkward shuffling while your date tries to work out whether to shake hands with the person dropping you off.

The PA handover is one of those dating logistics nobody writes songs about, but get it right and it barely registers. Get it wrong and it can set the tone for the whole evening.

Brief Your PA Before You Brief Your Date

The single best thing you can do happens before anyone leaves the house. Have a quick chat with your support worker about the plan: where you're being dropped, what time to be picked up, and how much — or how little — they should say.

Most PAs are absolute professionals at this. They've done a hundred school runs, appointments and social events, and they know the drill. But your dating life is yours, so it's worth being explicit. Something like: "I'll introduce you by first name only, we'll keep it to a minute, and I'll text when I want collecting." Simple, clear, done.

The Thirty-Second Handover Script

If the idea of the drop-off makes you sweat, rehearse it. Genuinely — say it out loud in the kitchen. Here's a version that works:

"Sam, this is Priya. Priya, this is Sam — they're my support worker and kindly chauffeur for the evening. Right, Sam, off you go — I'm in safe hands from here."

That's it. It's warm, it's brief, it tells your date exactly what they need to know without a medical history, and it has a punchline to break any tension. The humour does a lot of heavy lifting: it signals that this is normal, managed, and not a big deal — so your date can follow your lead and treat it the same way.

How Much Do You Actually Disclose?

This is entirely your call, and it can change from date to date. Some people are happy to explain the whole setup by date two; others prefer to keep the focus on getting to know each other and save the bigger conversations for later — which is fair, and covered plenty elsewhere on this site.

A useful rule of thumb: explain the logistics, not the details. "My support worker drops me off and picks me up" tells your date what they need to know for tonight. Anything beyond that can come when — and if — you want it to.

Privacy in a Small Car

One thing worth thinking about: PAs see a lot. They hear the pre-date nerves, they know where you're going, and they'll probably know how it went by the look on your face at pickup. If that's a comfortable dynamic, brilliant. If you'd rather keep some mystery, set it early.

A light "I'll give you the gossip rating out of ten on the way home — one word answers only" usually does the trick with a smile. Most support workers will genuinely respect the boundary; they're there to support your independence, not audit it.

When Things Go Sideways

Real scenarios, because they happen:

The date lingers. You're not ready to be picked up at nine. Text your PA and shift the time. Any decent PA expects this — dates run over. Build in flexibility from the start rather than cutting a good evening short.

Your date offers them a lift or insists they stay. Gently redirect: "That's really kind, but Sam's got their own evening planned." It reinforces that this is a professional arrangement and gently moves attention back to the two of you.

The pickup is early. Have a code. A simple emoji text meaning "running late, give me twenty more minutes" saves you from watching the clock over dessert.

Own It With Confidence

Here's the truth at the heart of it: how you frame the handover is how your date will receive it. Treat it as a mundane bit of admin — because it is — and it stays mundane. Apologise for it, act embarrassed about it, and you invite your date to see it as a problem.

A second date is about momentum. The PA handover is just the door before the good bit. Handle it with a smile, a script and a bit of humour, and you're free to get on with the actual romance — which, let's be honest, is the only part anyone remembers by the morning.
